Saxenburg Estate Wine Maker- Dirk Van Zyl
During a time of a most trying economy, a time where much doom and gloom are being witnessed. It is happiness, pure bliss hearing that The Saxenburg wine Estates Guinea Fowl White Wine and Red wine have both earned themselves a stunning Gold Medal each.
These were awarded to them by the credible judges of the Ultra Value Wine Challenge panel, 2020. Having grown up on this panel, from being part of the pouring team put together by Higgo Jacobs who was the Wine Tasting Director in 2011 on the Top 100 S.A wines to later being, an associate judge on the Ultra Value Wine Challenge panel at the (until our last born crept in, 2017) I can vouch that Robin Von Holdt does not take the quest of finding the best wine in each category lightly. Neither would the team of wine judges that are tasting on this panel
Hence we are here filled with excitement that Saxenburg can share these beautiful wines with the rest of South Africa and also the world. The Guinea Fowl range has specifically been produced to comprise the value for money wines, carrying the Saxenburg badge, yet being very moderately priced. The newly designed label derives from the inspiration of Saxenburg Wine Estate's beautiful Guinea Fowl birds that roam the vineyards. The design represents Saxenburg’s homage to the South African Winelands.
The Guinea Fowl White is 100% Chenin Blanc derived from Stellenbosh. The nose boasts stone fruit aromas with hints of pineapple and Granny Smith apple flavors, along with the classic peach aroma that often hints you of the varietal in a deductive tasting. On entry, this med dry palate shows vibrant fruit. There is a stunning mid-palate, with a long finish. This wine has great acidity and is light enough to have on its own or with a Caprese Salad or a Chicken Caeser salad. The Sommelier-Mother in me would even go as far, as to knick a bowl of Creamy Mac and Cheese from one of my kids, cause the acidity in this wine is great for that tomato base.
This is a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec,
and Cabernet Franc. The wine shows a stunning combination of dark and red fruit with dark cherry prominent plum. The wine is Medium on entry with oak complimenting it subtly. There are silky tannins and long lingering fruit. An ideal pairing for a game or full-flavored red meat dishes as well as pasta and pizza.
